Spout hollow nest boxes provide a drier and less stable microclimate than natural hollows

چکیده
Artificial tree hollows (e.g., nest-boxes) are commonly deployed to mitigate the loss of mature trees within human-disturbed landscapes. Their effectiveness as a habitat resource, and thus conservation management tool, is strongly influenced by suitability internal microclimate conditions. In south-eastern Australia, spout nesting resource used diverse community vertebrate species. We tested novel nest box design (spout boxes) that mimicked physical characteristics hollows. monitored occupancy (n = 193) 131) natural boxes woodland where were once abundant. Both occupied for breeding birds mammals. Natural had consistently higher humidity, thermal maxima minima buffered, when compared with boxes. These differences largely explained wall thickness. Spout displayed even more extreme temperature variation lower humidity not shaded. While conditions did prevent usage, tolerable thresholds hollow-dependent species may soon be exceeded under current climate change projections. Managers need carefully consider positioning ensure these supplementary resources purposes.

Surface reflectance drives nest box temperature profiles and thermal suitability for target wildlife
Thermal properties of tree hollows play a major role in survival and reproduction of hollow-dependent fauna. Artificial hollows (nest boxes) are increasingly being used to supplement the loss of natural hollows; however, the factors that drive nest box thermal profiles have received surprisingly little attention. We investigated how differences in surface reflectance influenced temperature prof...

The interaction of thermal radiation with conduction and laminar natural convection in a vertical circular pin, situated at participating gas, is numerically investigated. An absorbing and emitting gas is considered, and treated to be a gray participating media. Under the idealizing of gray gas, the Rosselan4 approximation is employed to describe the radiative heat flux in the energy equation. ...
متن کاملStudies on nest construction and nest microclimate of the Baya weaver, Ploceus philippinus (Linn.).
The nest construction pattern at different stages of nest and variations in the nest microclimate, i.e., temperature and light intensity were assessed in different nests of Baya weaver (Ploceus philippinus) between November 2002 and March 2003 in Nagapattinam and Tiruvarur District of Tamil Nadu, India. The Baya weaver constructed nests in palm (Borassus flabellifer), coconut (Cocos nucifera) a...
متن کاملA Comparison of the Characteristics and Fate of Barrow’s Goldeneye and Bufflehead Nests in Nest Boxes and Natural Cavities
Barrow’s Goldeneye (Bucephala islandica) and Bufflehead (B. albeola) are cavity-nesting waterfowl that have received considerable attention in studies using nest boxes, but little is known about their nesting ecology in natural cavities. We found larger clutch size, lower nesting success, and different major predators for Barrow’s Goldeneyes nesting in boxes versus those nesting in natural cavi...
